• Nelson Mandela was elected the first black president of South African in June 1994.

• Mandela was a leading role in ending the apartheid system in South Africa

• Mandela was the first black man, alongside Oliver Tambo, to open the first black legal partnership in 1953, which was the only all black law firm in the entire country

• Mandela founded and worked with a number of organisations to promote equality and to help fight medial problems like aids

• In 1993, Mandela received the Nobel Peace prize and was included in the top 100 most influential people of the 20th century
